It turns out that a lot of useful puncuation marks are also useful for, you know, writing html. I'm putting together this page as a reference for what symbols I find myself using often. There are also links to my references, so you can go look for what you find most useful.
It's a better idea to write your text somewhere else, then export it as HTML. But sometimes people (me) have bad ideas and try writing in an HTML editor, or want to quickly edit a few phrases here and there.

Double (aka normal) Quotation Marks. “ and ”
Single Quotation Marks. ‘ and ’
Semicolon. ;
Colon. :
Parentheses. ( and ) for left and right, respectively.
Ampersand. &
Tilde. ˜
